Landscapers and gardeners

Find a landscaper you can trust

A landscaper or gardener looks after outside spaces: garden clearances, lawns and turfing, hedge and tree work, patios, fencing and gates, driveways and full garden designs. Hard landscaping such as patios and driveways needs proper groundwork and drainage to last.

Before you hire a landscaper

  • Waste carrier licence

Garden waste has to go somewhere. If the job includes taking it away, ask whether the landscaper holds an Environment Agency waste carrier registration.

  • Drainage on hard surfaces

A front driveway over five square metres usually needs permeable paving or drainage to a soakaway to avoid planning permission. Ask how water will drain.

  • Insurance

Tree work and machinery carry risk. Public liability insurance protects you and your neighbours if something goes wrong.

How Fettld protects your deposit

When you accept a quote, you pay a deposit to Fettld, not straight to the landscaper. Your money is held as a deposit by Fettld until you approve the work. It's released when you confirm the job is done, or automatically 7 days after the trade marks the stage complete if you don't raise a problem. Bigger jobs are split into stages, and if something goes wrong our Resolution Centre steps in.

Questions about landscapers and gardeners

Do I need permission to cut down a tree?

If the tree has a tree preservation order or is in a conservation area, you usually need to tell or ask the council first. Check with your council before any major tree work.

When is the best time to lay turf?

Autumn and spring, when the ground is moist and temperatures are mild. Turf laid in hot, dry weather needs a lot of watering to establish.

Who owns the fence between me and my neighbour?

Your property deeds may show it, often with a T mark on the boundary. If they don't, agree with your neighbour before replacing a shared fence.
