Before you hire a heating engineer
Gas Safe for gas boilers
Servicing, repairing or fitting a gas boiler is gas work, so the engineer must be on the Gas Safe Register. Fettld checks this before a heating engineer is verified.
Registration of a new boiler
A new boiler must be registered with building control. A Gas Safe engineer can do this for you, and you should receive a certificate and the completed Benchmark checklist.
Warranty terms
Ask who registers the manufacturer's warranty and what servicing it needs. Most warranties need a yearly service by a Gas Safe engineer.
Rough price guidance
Broad typical ranges for straightforward jobs, to help you sense-check quotes. They're guidance only, not Fettld prices or averages; real quotes depend on access, materials, the size of the job and how soon you need it.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Annual gas boiler service | £70 to £130 |
| Boiler repair, excluding major parts | £100 to £350 |
| Replace a combi boiler, fitted | £2,000 to £4,000 |
How Fettld protects your deposit
When you accept a quote, you pay a deposit to Fettld, not straight to the heating engineer. Your money is held as a deposit by Fettld until you approve the work. It's released when you confirm the job is done, or automatically 7 days after the trade marks the stage complete if you don't raise a problem. Bigger jobs are split into stages, and if something goes wrong our Resolution Centre steps in.
Questions about heating engineers
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Once a year is the usual advice, and most manufacturers need yearly servicing to keep the warranty valid. Landlords must also have gas boilers safety checked every 12 months.
Is it worth repairing an old boiler?
Often, for a single fault on a boiler that's otherwise reliable. If it keeps breaking down, parts are hard to find or it's well over 10 to 15 years old, a replacement quote is worth comparing alongside the repair.
Can I get a grant for a heat pump?
In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a grant towards an air or ground source heat pump. The installer must be MCS certified and applies on your behalf, so ask about it when you request quotes.
Why is my radiator cold at the top?
Usually trapped air. Bleeding the radiator with a radiator key often fixes it. If it's cold at the bottom or keeps needing bleeding, a heating engineer may recommend a powerflush or a check of the system pressure.
