Gas engineers

Find a gas engineer you can trust

A gas engineer installs, services and repairs anything that burns gas: hobs, ovens, fires, pipework and meters. Landlords need one every year for a gas safety certificate (CP12), and anyone who smells gas or sees a lazy yellow flame should get an engineer to check the appliance before using it again.

Before you hire a gas engineer

  • Gas Safe registration is the law

Anyone working on gas in your home must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see the card and check the back lists the work you need, such as cookers or fires.

  • Paperwork you should get

Expect a written record for a safety check or a new installation. Landlords need a CP12 certificate every 12 months and must give tenants a copy.

  • Insurance

Public liability insurance protects you if something goes wrong during the job. Every gas engineer on Fettld has had their cover reviewed.

How Fettld protects your deposit

When you accept a quote, you pay a deposit to Fettld, not straight to the gas engineer. Your money is held as a deposit by Fettld until you approve the work. It's released when you confirm the job is done, or automatically 7 days after the trade marks the stage complete if you don't raise a problem. Bigger jobs are split into stages, and if something goes wrong our Resolution Centre steps in.

Questions about gas engineers

How do I check someone is Gas Safe registered?

Ask for their Gas Safe ID card, which shows their photo, licence number and the types of work they're qualified for. You can confirm it on the Gas Safe Register website. Fettld checks Gas Safe registration before a gas engineer is shown as verified.

How often does a landlord need a gas safety check?

Every 12 months, for every gas appliance, fitting and flue the landlord provides. The tenant must receive a copy of the record within 28 days of the check.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Open doors and windows, don't use electrical switches or naked flames, turn off the gas at the meter if you can, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
