Carpenters and joiners

Find a carpenter you can trust

A carpenter or joiner works with timber around the home: hanging doors, fitting skirting and architrave, building wardrobes and shelving, fitting kitchens, laying wooden floors, building decking and repairing stairs. Joiners often make items in a workshop, while carpenters fit them on site, though most people use the words interchangeably.

Before you hire a carpenter

  • Fire doors done properly

If you're in a flat or a three-storey house, some internal doors may need to be fire doors. Ask the carpenter whether your doors are affected and how they'll be fitted.

  • A clear specification

For fitted furniture, agree materials, finish, handles and who paints it in the quote, ideally with a drawing or photos of a similar job.

  • Insurance

Public liability insurance covers accidental damage while the carpenter is working in your home.

How Fettld protects your deposit

When you accept a quote, you pay a deposit to Fettld, not straight to the carpenter. Your money is held as a deposit by Fettld until you approve the work. It's released when you confirm the job is done, or automatically 7 days after the trade marks the stage complete if you don't raise a problem. Bigger jobs are split into stages, and if something goes wrong our Resolution Centre steps in.

Questions about carpenters and joiners

What's the difference between a carpenter and a joiner?

Traditionally a joiner makes timber items such as doors, windows and stairs in a workshop, and a carpenter fits them on site. Today many do both, so look at their past work rather than the title.

Can a carpenter fit a kitchen?

Many can fit the units, worktops and doors. Plumbing, gas and electrical connections need the right trades, so ask whether the quote includes them or whether you'll need separate quotes.

How long does it take to fit a fitted wardrobe?

A simple alcove wardrobe is often two to four days on site, plus time beforehand if the carcasses or doors are made to measure.
